Wasps. The Difference between wasps and bees

Wasps are distinguishable from bees by their pointed lower abdomens and the narrow “waist,” called a petiole, that separates the abdomen from the thorax.

They come in every color imaginable, from the familiar yellow to brown, metallic blue, and even bright red. Generally, the brighter colored species are in the Vespidae, or stinging wasp, family.
All wasps build nests.
Whereas bees secrete a waxy substance to construct their nests,
Wasps create their familiar papery abodes from wood fibers scraped with their hard mandibles and chewed into a pulp.

Social wasp colonies are started from scratch each spring by a queen who was fertilized the previous year and survived the winter by hibernating in a warm place. When she emerges, she builds a small nest and rears a starter brood of worker females. These workers then take over expanding the nest, building multiple six-sided cells into which the queen continually lays eggs. By late summer, a colony can have more than 5,000 individuals, all of whom, including the founding queen, die off at winter. Only newly fertilized queens survive the cold to restart the process in spring.

Wasp nest removal – Onguard Pest Control saves the day

Wasp nest in garden shed

Sometimes immediate wasp nest removal is vital. In one particular case, having a wasp nest in a shed, with angry insects buzzing around, meant a loss of day’s wages for 3 people, so it was absolutely essential for us to react quickly.

Here is our client’s description of the events…

Wasp nest removal – Client’s story

Wasp nest removal - Onguard Pest Control in action“I had been planning a shed and garden clear out for some time but as it was too much work to do on my own, I had employed a local firm to help. We opened the shed and within seconds of dragging an old cover out, we were surrounded be a swarm of wasps. We tried to chase them away with a fly spray, but after a couple of nasty stings, we beat a hasty retreat. My arms hurt like hell and I was not in a mood to play around. I called in the “heavies”.

I found Onguard Pest Control on the internet and gave them a call. They explained that the best way to get rid of wasps was to use a powder spray on the nest in an evening when all the wasps were at home and that by morning all of them would be dead.

I explained that I had two people working for me that day and needed it done immediately. The Technician was on his way to another call but agreed to make a detour and use a wet spray for more immediate results. He explained that would not kill any wasps that were not in the nest and that the wasps returning later in the day would not be happy. I didn’t care… I needed to get rid of them now so I could continue with the clear out.

Keith arrived 40 minutes later and after getting kitted out in his “wasp suit”, he attended to my problem. He sprayed the wasp nest and treated the surrounding walls to help kill the wasps that were not “at home”. Within half an hour they were dead. The odd returning wasp slowed us down occasionally but we were  able to get on with clearing the shed and surrounding garden.

Keith’s prompt response saved me having to pay my clear out team to come back another day. I would recommend his service to anybody.”
